WORLD;
Alvin's world is one in which cursed and otherwise supernatural people are treated as a social problem. Such people are referred to a “The Supernaturally Afflicted”, if you want to be politically correct, or monsters, beasts and abominations if you don't. The society as a whole is modern day America, and there is a developing movement fighting for civil rights for the supernaturally afflicted.

The struggles of each subgroup of the supernaturally afflicted are different, but anyone who has proven themselves too dangerous, and some of the subgroups as a whole, are forced to live in governmentally owned “Supernaturally Afflicted Sanctuaries”, where they are overseen by government employees. People who live in these places often refer to themselves as “Sassies” as a joke on the acronym 'S.A.S.'. SAS culture thrives over the internet, where isolated sassies and free supernaturally afflicted (F.S.A.s) can interact. S.A.S. Housing standards are small two-bedroom, 1-bathroom, single-gender apartments in private, fenced off complexes that contain a medical center, a common room, a cafeteria, and cages for werewolves in their wolf forms. Other housing and room changes can be arranged at the request of inhabitants. People in S.A.S. housing are usually required to attend 'Man-eaters Anonymous' meetings, where they discuss their struggles and form connections with other sassies.

Werewolves and Wendigos, being the most dangerous, are required to either be put down or to stay in these housing complexes, although there are small underground groups that try to keep them outside of the Sanctuaries. Vampires are kept on government lists, and are allowed to exist in normal society so long as they don't step over any lines, although stereotypes are rampant and they are discriminated against. The last type are the permanently cursed, a group which is massively varied and are treated on a case by case basis.

Lycanthropy is the only affliction that can spread independently. Werewolves transform on the full moon and are increasingly grumpy in the days before, and while they attack to kill, a bite from one that does not prove fatal passes on the affliction. A transformed werewolf has no control over themselves and will have no memory of the events that happen while in wolf form. Transformed werewolves appear as massive, monstrous wolves that run on four legs. In order to limit the danger of werewolves, anyone who is bitten is given two choices: be painlessly put to death, or have their legs removed to cripple the wolf form and go into the S.A.S. System. Werewolves are feared and discriminated against, but the government has made it illegal to openly discriminate against them, allowing that they have had their amputations. In spite of this, many werewolves are not given jobs and cannot go to college. Werewolf civil rights is currently a heated discussion, and a small 'bite survivor pride' community has bubbled up. They often wear wolf-themed jewelry and clothing, which some teenagers have taken as an 'edgy' look.

Wendigos are the rarest of the supernaturally afflicted, as the conditions for their creation are hard to achieve. In order to become one, a person must consume human flesh out of desperation while in range of a vengeful nature spirit. After this, the next time they sleep, the transformation will begin. While they are stereotyped as frostbitten northerners, some have achieved their status in the desert or when lost in warmer weathered forests. Prior to the early 2000s, Wendigos were mostly out of the public eye, with cases in modern society numbering under 100. However, in 2003, a man managed to stay awake long enough to make it back to society after consuming human flesh while snowed into his family's cabin. He was hospitalized for exposure, and his transformation occurred in the hospital, where he killed 54 people before being taken down. Wendigos are unable to control their desire for human flesh, and are chronically hungry, no matter how much they eat. However, they are easily incapacitated by wiring their jaws shut and killing their sense of smell. Wendigos only need about 100 calories a day to survive, and like werewolves, their options are to be put down or put into the S.A.S. System.

Vampires are the most common of the supernaturally afflicted, as well as the most misunderstood. They are fetishized by the mainstream media while simultaneously villainous, and many people still believe the myth that vampirism can be passed on through a bite. There is tension between some camps of vampires and werewolves over this, because the vampires blame the werewolves for causing this misunderstanding. Vampires require human blood in order to nourish their own, and will become dangerously anemic and eventually die without it. However, they need to eat other food as well. Vampirism is considered to be a supernatural genetic disorder, as it is passed on from mother to child. Their skin is sensitive to the sunlight and they are highly prone to sensory issues, particularly being negatively responsive to strong smells. They are allowed to be independent from the S.A.S. system unless they want to join up or become a burden on the places they live.

Finally are the people with assorted curses placed upon them by other humans. These curses are gained in many ways, and some are fatal and others are not. Some people with curses go completely under the radar and are never discovered, while others are put on government lists like vampires, and still others are forced into the S.A.S. system on threat of death.
